Group Coaching

The Vision

Here it is. I can give you instructions and you just follow the instructions. Sounds good, right? Well, maybe not so much. The problem with instructions is that they don't answer the whys and what ifs. There are just too many variables.

When I made my decision to defeat what came to be known as Measure O in Los Angeles County in November 2015, I knew very little about school construction bonds. I spent weeks reading and researching, while at the same time trying to meet deadlines that I didn't even know existed when I began.

You can do the same as I did. You may even be better at it than I was. As a practical matter, however, you're very likely not going to do it. Even with the best of intentions, life is likely to get in your way. That's the way of the world.

Coaching

Professional athletes are the best at what they do. Many have natural talent, but every single one of them would not be where they are without having been coached along the way. The best coaches are typically single-minded and always focused on the goal.

In order to win any political battle, let alone a war, you need to be single-minded and focused as well. A mutual commitment forms the basis for any coaching process.

Coaching requires a commitment, both from the coach and the individuals being coached. It's a two-way street.

While the focus of this coaching will be about defeating school local bonds, the insights, strategies, and techniques you will learn have wide applicability both inside and outside of political battlefields.

Mentoring

Some of you may wish to become coaches yourselves. Just knowing the techniques does not necessarily make you a coach.

In my biggest vision, I would replicate what I do and what I know all over the state and the country. I would love to find people who can embrace a big vision. This is not a cloning program. You bring your own unique gifts to the table. I'm not planning on changing that.

Qualifications

Your time is valuable. So is mine. If you wish to participate in the group coaching or mentoring that I am offering, you must make a commitment. I will make a corresponding commitment. It's like joining a team. The team members make mutual commitments to each other to show up and play their role. Your commitments must include the following:

  • You commit to accept coaching. (Not everyone is coachable.)
  • You commit to a 1-hour, weekly group coaching call.
  • You commit to prepare for the call, a.k.a., homework.
  • You commit to create an action plan.
  • You commit to execute the steps on the action plan.

This might sound a little overwhelming. You shouldn't worry. Just as every athlete has different skills and capabilities, so do you. You won't all be playing the same roles. You'll also be setting the rules for your own game. Part of the coaching will deal with not putting yourself into a position where you become overwhelmed.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
Serenity Prayer, Reinhold Niebuhr

I don't consider these words of wisdom limiting at all. Life is not static. What you cannot change today, you may be able to change tomorrow. If every individualist took this wisdom to heart, instead of tilting at windmills, like Don Quixote, or pushing the boulder up the hill, like Sisyphus, they would change the political landscape within two election cycles.

The Interview

Signing up for an interview is the first step. It does not require you to make any commitments. It just lets me know that you're interested. I'll be contacting you by phone, or in a teleconference, so you can determine whether this is something you want to pursue.

Complete the form to request an interview.
